L’Shanah Tovah to my friends and family observing Rosh Hashanah.

Do you belong to MyPoints.com?  I fairly regularly earn enough points to get free giftr cards.  Generally I get restaurant ones.  Makes me feel like I’ve earned a treat.  Anyway, I want to applaud their customer service.  HSN apparently doesn’t send them the info to credit my account when I make purchases from them.  I recently had three purchases that weren’t credited.  One of them, a biggie, I worked out with HSN.  MyPoints took care of the other two within 24 hours, (which started on a Sunday).  I really appreciate good customer servicer.  There’s another one I have to wait another week on.  We shall see if HSN steps up.

Giveawayoftheday.com has a nice photo editing program today.  Visually it’s not for me with my poor vision, and it has a large footprint.  One of the commenters suggested this free program, which I downloaded through CNet, so I felt safe about it.  http://www.funny-photo-maker.com/.  A couple of examples:

You know I’m a BzzAgent and review products they give me for free.  I have two today

1 – I am totally in love with Covergirl in general, but I will definitely keep purchasing these products, COVERGIRL & Olay Tone Rehab 2-in-1 Foundation and COVERGIRL & Olay Pressed Powder.  My husband (see $2 bill) hates makeup.  He couldn’t tell (perhaps someone more observant could) I was wearing these, and told me how good I looked the first time I wore them.  He doesn’t usually comment on how I look.  Major thumbs up.  My daughter (beer glass), who usually notices everything, came out to visit and almost immediately told me how good my skin looked, not my makeup, my skin.  Another thumbs up.  This makeup doesn’t settle in your nooks and crannies (or if you’re not an English Muffin, wrinkles), and really smooths out your skin tone.  I’m a believer.

2 –  I was sent coupons for free Glade Expressions room fresheners.

I had a hard time finding them.  I went to two different Walmarts and neither had them.  A local supermarket didn’t either.  I went to Pathmark in Port Jefferson and found them both there, but a prices higher than my free coupons allowed.  Being a good little bargain hunter, I was prepared.  I’d downloaded a coupon online for $2 off two glade purchases.  I did get them for free (if you disregard the price of gas).

I love the look and the scent of the oil diffuser starter kit in pineapple mangosteen.  I wish the scent spread out more, but that’s true of all diffusers I’ve used.  My livingroom is large, and I might want to have two going at once.  Very pretty and pleasant.

The Glade Experssions starter kit comes with an elegantly shaped white squeeze sprayer.  I got it in cotton & Italian mandarin.  I’m using that in the bathroom, where a squeeze will be more often desirable.  It’s also a pleasant scent which I’d prefer with more mandarin, but that’s just a matter of personal taste.  It does the job.

Review:  I broke down and decided to try Dermastore’s SmartLash.  It’s not supposed to have the side effects of Latisse, so I felt pretty safe trying it.  I used it once a day (not recommended twice) for about 3 weeks.  I woke up last Sunday morning and when I went to put on my mascara, I saw dark rings around the iris’ of both eyes.  It looked like someone took a magic marker and drew a circle around them.  Very scary, monsteresque looking.  I could have done an episode of Supernatural, if I could act.  I called Dermastore Monday, and the customer service rep insisted that the product was all natural and couldn’t do any harm.  I mentioned that hemlock is all natural.  She may or may not have gotten the message.  She kept saying it couldn’t discolor my eyelids.  My eyelids aren’t discolored, so that may be true.  She apparently doesn’t know what the iris is.  I asked to speak to someone in charge.  Got a call back Thursday.  The person said she never heard any complaints like this before, but would surely keep on top of it, and asked me to contact her after I see my opthamologist, credited my card for the original purchase, and cancelled auto delivery.  She couldn’t understand why the person I originally spoke to didn’t do that.  Apparently she never met her.  Okay, I know this has worked for some, but, I do not recommend this product.  Just for the record, since I stopped using SmartLash, the thick dark rings have become thinner.  I’m really hoping they go away.

This recipe is from Giada, and I call it a cheat recipe because it includes jarred marinara sauce (I used Newman’s because it was on sale, and is really good)  My chopped carrots never got soft enough, and in the future I will use only ones I’ve teeny tiny diced, or perhaps a cup of frozen mixed vegetables.  The pasta I used was small whole grain elbows.  It is really delicious, and for me it’s a meal.

Quick and Spicy Tomato Soup
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 carrots, peeled and chopped
1 small onion, chopped (diced tiny)
1 clove garlic, minced
1 (26-ounce) jar marinara sauce
2 (14-ounce) cans chicken broth
1 (15-ounce) can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1/2 cup pastina pasta (or any small pasta)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Warm the olive oil in a large soup pot over medium-high heat. Add the carrots, onion, and garlic and saute until soft, about 2 minutes.
Add the jar of marinara sauce, chicken broth, cannellini beans, red pepper flakes, pasta, salt and pepper. Simmer for at least 10 minutes.
My friend Patty sent this.  All my health conscious friends need to relax and read it.

Q: Doctor, I’ve heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true? A: Heart only good for so many beats, and that it… Don’t waste on exercise. Everything wear out eventually. Speeding up heart not make you live longer; it like saying you extend life of car by driving faster. Want to live longer? Take nap.
Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: Oh no. Wine made from fruit. Brandy distilled wine, that mean they take water out of fruity bit so you get even more of goodness that way. Beer also made of grain. Bottom up!
Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have body and you have fat, your ratio one to one. If you have two body, your ratio two to one.
Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can’t think of single one, sorry. My philosophy: No pain…good! Q: Aren’t fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU NOT LISTENING! Food fried in vegetable oil. How getting more vegetable be bad?
: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle? A: Oh no! When you exercise muscle, it get bigger. You should only be doing sit-up if you want bigger stomach.
Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: You crazy?!? HEL-LO-O!! Cocoa bean! Another vegetable! It best feel-good food around!
Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming good for figure, explain whale to me.
Q: Is getting in shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! ‘Round’ is shape! Well… I hope this has cleared up any misconceptions you may have had about food and diets.
And remember: Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways – Chardonnay in one hand – chocolate in the other – body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming “WOO-HOO, what a ride!!”
For those of you who watch what you eat, here’s the final word on nutrition and health. It’s a relief to know the truth after all those conflicting nutritional studies.
1. The Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
2. The Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
3. The Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
4. The Italians drink a lot of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans…
5. The Germans drink a lot of beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than Americans.
CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Well, the regular work week is back at Hubby’s job.  He has to leave much earlier in the morning, and overtime hasn’t started, so he’ll be home much earlier, for a while.  Gives us both time to adapt.

As a rule, we never keep much cash around.  All of our check are direct deposit, and we have credit cards, so we only withdraw cash when we need it.  Hubby pulled out some paper money yesterday, mostly singles, single on top, and someone commented “Must be a Jewish bankroll.  Well, I don’t know these expressions because I wouldn’t spend time with people who would use them, but it sure sounded to me like she was saying Jews are cheap, phoney, and braggarts.  Am I wrong?  I hope it’s just me being a bit paranoid, but I think not.  I get so angry at any religious, racial, or appearance slurs.

Since Hubby just got his first Social Security payment, this hit a nerve.  I got it in an email, and haven’t verified anything, but the principle is there.

Have you noticed , your Social Security check is   now referred to as a   “Federal   Benefit Payment”?
I’ll be part of the one percent to forward this.
I am   forwarding it because it touches a nerve in me, and I hope it will in you.
Please   keep passing it on until everyone in our country has read it.
The   government is now referring to our Social Security checks as a “Federal   Benefit Payment.”;
This isn’t a benefit – its   earned income!
Not   only did we all contribute to Social Security but our employers did too.
It   totaled 15% of our income before taxes.
If you   averaged $30K per year over your working life, that’s close to $180,000   invested in Social Security.
If you calculate the future value of your monthly investment in social   security ($375/month,
including   both you and your employer’s contributions) at a meager 1% interest   rate compounded monthly,
after   40 years of working you’d have more than $1.3+ million dollars saved!   This is your personal investment .
Upon retirement, if you took out only 3% per year, you’d receive   $39,318 per year, or $3,277 per month .
That’s   almost   three times more   than today’s   average Social Security benefit of $1,230 per month,
according   to the Social Security Administration (Google it – it’s a fact).
And   your retirement fund would last more than 33 years (until you’re 98 if you retire   at age 65)!
I   can only imagine how much better most average-income people could live in   retirement if
our   government had just invested our money in low-risk interest-earning accounts.
Instead,   the folks in Washington pulled off a bigger Ponzi scheme than Bernie Madoff ever did.
They   took our money and used it elsewhere. They “forgot” that it was   OUR   money they were   taking.
They   didn’t have a referendum to ask us if we wanted to lend the money to   them.
And   they didn’t pay interest on the debt they assumed.
And   recently, they’ve told us that the money won’t support us for   very much longer.
But   is it our fault they misused our investments?
And   now, to add insult to injury, they’re calling it a   “benefit,” as if we never worked to earn every penny of it.
Just because they “borrowed” the money, doesn’t mean that our   investments were a   charity !
Let’s   take a stand.
We   have earned our right to Social Security and Medicare.
Demand   that our legislators bring some sense into our government –;
Find   a way to keep Social Security and Medicare going, for the sake of that 92% of   our population who need it.
Here’s   a novel idea: Reduce the military budget to support our own population.
Get   out of the countries who don’t want us there.
Bring   our soldiers home and invest some of the $700B+ in giving them new careers
building   roads and parks, teaching our children, creating new technologies,   discovering cures for illness.
Then take the rest and begin to pay back Social Security, and call it what it is: Our Earned Retirement Income.

Hi.  Remember me?  My computer went into the shop (Staples) to et my “stuff” transferred.  They didn’t get my Organize files, but copied a bunch of stuff.  Unfortunately, now the computer won’t read my keyboard or printer.  Must bring it back.  I’m on the old one, which is not my friend.

Last Thursday my daughter and I spent an early Mothers Day.  We had tickets to The Chew at 7:30 am.  Caught a 5:42 train into the City.  I think Michael Simon is the cutest.  My daughter got to sit at the tasting table, and it was “Wing Day”.  What can be yummier than wings?  The show will be on 6/21 and she’ll be the taster in the purple dress.  I’m the very short person behind her in a blue blouse.  After the show we went to a coffee-house (okay, coffee is up there in the yummy department too).  One of the camera men recognized my daughter and came over to talk (hit on her?).  He was cute, but she’s taken.  We had a nice talk about the show.  Then, she took me for a Mothers Day lunch at Rosy’s Mexican.  Super pomegranate margarita, lamb tacos, and duck enchilada.  Queen of the doggie bag here finished every bite, and sip.  Everything was delicious, and they make great rice.

Then, we went to The Fella’s apartment and took a nap.  He was out training (he teaches at a City College and is a personal trainer).  We then headed out to Big Daddy’s diner, where I treated the two of them to dinner to celebrate is grad school graduation the next day.

I got home on the railroad at 12:37 where Hubby met me after work.  Long, but very good day.

I have a store to ward you about.  I ordered two room dividers, on sale with coupon.  After they didn’t come, I called to ask about them.  I was told they cancelled the order because they were out of them.  I checked online, and they still have them, but at a higher price.  I will no longer shop at Furniture, Rugs and Home Decor | Home Decorators Collection.  They’re officially on my poop list.

Sneeqpeeq is giving out a free bamboo ring to new member.  Membership is free, and you don’t have to buy anything, though I have.  Got a snazzy Prolis hot iron for under $30 including s&h.  Never know what they’ll come up with.  If  you join, please do from my link.

Buzz, Rant & Bargains

I’ve been running around and making calls to get things faxed, notarized and sent to my two lawyers and mortgage broker.  I was asleep when Hubby got home from work, and have to remember to have him sign more papers I need to fax before he goes to work.

I’m having trouble with the mail carrier from hell.  He/she never tries to deliver packages, just leaves them at our complex office.  They’re not open at a time my husband can go there before or after work (don’t want them to work too hard).  It’s a bit far for me to walk, especially if I have to carry packages back.  I complained to the post office manager, and he told the carrier to pick up packages left in office, and deliver all  future packages to my door.  Spiteful SOB put my mail in someone else’s mailbox, left past packages in office, and delivered my 3 month supply of medicine, which I really need, to someone else’s apartment.  Person was nice enough to bring it to me.  I can’t believe this AH has a job, and I don’t.

Another Facebook deal.  25% off entire purchase at Ruby Tuesday’s

This is from BCO, and I’m not familiar with their quality, but you can get a wool 3/4 coat (in my day we called it a car coat) for $34.  40 % off highest priced item with code BC17115 , and $1.99 s&h over $25.   The sizes start at 12.

Plus Size ¾ Wool Coat | Plus Size Coats | Bargain Catalog Outlet

Today’s WOOT is quite a bargain, especially if they send you fun colors.  You can’t pick.  If I had a younger daughter, I’d get a smaller size and embellish with fabric markers, ribbons, & bedazzler to use as nightshirts.  A fun idea for a sleepover.

I left out one of the travel disasters the other day.  When we registered into the hotel, they took my credit card in case I walked off with a tv in my pocket, or some such nonsense.  They gave me some paper work, but not my card back.  I didn’t need it, so didn’t realize till it was time to leave.  I was told to call security, who told me to call Lost and Found.  Lost and Found was closed till Monday (this was Friday).  I don’t know if the desk clerk put it in her pocket or whatever, because the slightest bit of common sense screams that as I was a guest in the hotel, they should have at least called my room to say they have it.  Na da.  I really, truly believe that when they started letting kids use calculators in school they started producing non-thinkers.  Math is logic, and they are depriving these kids of mental exercise.  Makes me a bit crazy, like when a sales clerk in a sporting goods store pulled out a calculator to find out what the 10% discount is on $1.  I’ll save not teaching grammar for another rant.
